Munich Reinsurance Group (Munich Re), the generally recognized world leader in the field of reinsurance of significant risks was established in 1880 under the initiative of the large German businessman and financier Charl von Тhieme, who was one of the first to realize idea of an economically independent company specialized exclusively in the field of reinsurance operations.

Shortly after creation, Munich Re opens offices in a number of cities of Europe, including Paris, St.-Petersburg, Copenhagen, Stockholm, London, and then New York. One of the major directions of Munich Re activity is the business connected with direct life insurance and health. In 2000 in these types of insurance the company collected 10,304,000,000 euros that makes 71.5% of the premiums received from direct insurance by Munich Re. In 2000 Munich Re received from reinsurance of life and health risks nearly 5 billion euros that makes more than 25% of total reinsurance premiums of the company. In total in 2000 the concern Munich Re Group collected 31,113,000,000 euros. The net profit on results 2000 was equal to 1,250,000,000 euros.

In 2004 Munich Reinsurance Group was awarded with the title “Reinsurance Company of the Year” by British magazine "Reactions" which is substantially focused on primary insurers and reinsurers. The review was based on interviews of the magazine’s readers. Thus such high estimation was put by experts who are either clients of Munich Re and can estimate correctly the quality of company services, or experts who work in the insurance market and are potential clients of Munich Re. The Chairman of the Board of Munich Reinsurance Group commented on the received award in “Rendezvous de Septembre” in Monte Carlo: “We are satisfied, that our partners estimate their business cooperation with us so highly. Their belief is a big stimulus for us.”

On May 15, 2001 the Insurance company "ТАS", one of the first Ukrainian life insurance companies signed the reinsurance contract with Munich Reinsurance Group and is a strategic partner of Munich Re in Ukraine providing a significant part of the reinsurance turnover in our country.
